Bristol sounds

Massive Attack, Tricky, Roni Size; all big Bristol names and their version of the Bristol Sound owes much to the music brought to this country from the Caribbean. It was not until the Bamboo Club in St Pauls was established in the 1960s that there was a venue for these sounds. City of Bristol College Level 2 Art and Design students produced music posters representing these clubs that no longer exist; The Bamboo Club (Paul Street, St Pauls), The Dugout (Park Row), The Moon Club (Moon Street, off Stokes Croft).

Local Learning worked closely with UWE History undergraduates, Laura Young and Poppy Clark as part of their History in the Public Space placement. Listen here to Laura’s interview with the legendary DJ Derek as they talk over a pint in a local Wetherspoon’s pub about being a young white Bristolian learning Jamaican patois at the barber shop on St Nicholas Road, DJing with Daddy G and hanging out with Toots.
